Known for its slick modernist architecture, glamorous shopping district and vibrant nightlife, Dusseldorf might be the ultimate city break destination and however long you stay, you’ll probably regret not having more time. With just one day in Dusseldorf it’s still possible to take in the highlights, but make sure to stick around in the evening hours to see the city at its most atmospheric.
A hop-on hop-off bus tour including Rhine River sightseeing cruise is a great way to make the most of a day tour, covering all the city center sights. Make an early start and head straight for the historic Altstadt (Old Town), where highlights include the Burgplatz Tower, the Neander-church and Old City Hall (Rathaus), then stroll down the waterfront Rheinuferpromenade.
From here, it’s possible to enjoy a sightseeing cruise along the famous Rhine River, or else keep walking until you reach the modern MediaHarbor at the south end of the Rheinuferpromenade. The recently renovated MediaHarbor is best known for its modernist architecture, including the unique Gehry buildings and the looming Rheinturm TV Tower, but it’s also a scenic spot for lunch, with a number of waterfront cafes and restaurants to choose from.
After lunch, head to Dusseldorf’s legendary Königsallee (King’s Alley), the city’s prettiest boulevard and main shopping hub, where designer boutiques, department stores and cafes line the banks of a tree-lined canal. At the northern end of Königsallee, the Hofgarten park is Germany’s oldest public park and it’s a beautiful retreat from the city, with woodland walks, a boating lake, a number of historic monuments and the striking Jägerhof Palace.
As the sun sets, head back to the Old Town and learn why the Altstadt has been nicknamed ‘the longest bar in the world’. Hundreds of bars, nightclubs, restaurants and music venues line the streets, so whether you want to party into the early hours or just enjoy a post-sightseeing cocktail, there’s something for everyone. For the quintessential Dusseldorf experience, end your day at one of the traditional beer halls, where the drink of choice is Altbier, a local beer that’s been brewed in the city since the 19th century.
