Off the Beaten Track in Frankfurt’s Bornheim District

It was once nicknamed Das lustige Dorf (“the Merry Village”) thanks to its abundance of cider taverns and thriving red light district, and while it’s long since lost its seediness, Frankfurt’s Bornheim district retains its lively atmosphere and abundance of bars. Despite being one of the city’s most populated areas and a popular haunt for locals, Bornheim remains off the beaten track for most tourists; visiting the hip neighborhood is a surefire way to get an authentic taste of modern Frankfurt.

Bornheim, along with Frankfurt’s Sachsenhausen district, draws a young and creative crowd, and an eclectic mix of bars, pubs, restaurants and shops have sprung up to cater to them. Berger Strasse is the main thoroughfare, home to two of the city’s most historic wine taverns, Solzer and Zur Sonne, where Frankfurt’s traditional apple wine is served. Bornheim Mitte square lies at its heart, where a bustling farmer’s market is held on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Cafés line the streets in the summer months, while the unique Bauhaus-style Holy Cross Church is one of the neighborhood’s most distinct landmarks.

To the east of Bornheim, the gigantic 32-hectare Ostpark (East Park) is a popular recreational ground. The neighboring Ratsweg fairground hosts Frankfurt’s famous Dipperness funfair, the region’s largest folk festival, which takes place twice a year, in spring and autumn.
