Beer tasting in Germany
Frankfurt might be better known for its wine and local specialty Apple Wine, than beer, but with its close proximity to Bavaria, there are also plenty of options for beer tasting around Frankfurt. Head to nearby cities like Nuremberg, Cologne and Heidelberg, where there are a range of brewpubs to choose from; tour the Würzburg Hofbräu; or venture off-the-beaten-track on the self-guided Brewery Trail from Bamberg.
There are dozens of beer varieties produced around Bavaria and the Rhine, but top choices to look out for include characteristic beers like Pils, Dunkles and Bock, and regional specialties like Rauchbier (smoked beer) in Bamberg, Weissbier (White beer) in Munich, Kölsch in Cologne and Altbier in Dusseldorf.
It’s also possible to visit Munich on a day trip from Frankfurt and the beer Mecca of Germany has endless choices for beer lovers, with a brewing history dating back more than 200 years. The historic Hofbräuhaus, Munich’s biggest beer hall, will likely be top of your list, but a tour of the top beer halls should also include the Augustinerkeller, Löwenbräukeller and the Weisses Bräuhaus, which specializes in Weissbier (white beer), as well as the beer gardens at the Viktualienmarkt, Augustiner Keller or Hirschgarten. For the full experience, take a tour of the Paulaner brewery, visit during Oktoberfest, the world’s biggest beer festival, or opt for a Munich beer evening walking tour and sample as many Bavarian beer varieties as possible.
