Dusseldorf’s Konigsallee

Running parallel to the river, from the Hofgarten park to the botanical gardens, Dusseldorf’s Konigsallee (King’s Alley) is the main artery of the modern city, a wide pedestrian boulevard lined with shops, cafés and restaurants. Affectionately nicknamed the “Ko” by locals, Konigsallee is Dusseldorf’s busiest shopping street, home to one of the country’s biggest and most impressive Kaufhof department stores, housed in an elaborate Art Nouveau building.

There’s also the Sevens mall, a number of five-star hotels, a Michelin-starred restaurant (the Victorian Restaurant) and dozens of big-name designer, luxury jewelry and accessory boutiques, not to mention high-end technology stores and glitzy arcades. It’s the ultimate shopping destination in the city and a prime spot for people-watching and window-shopping even for those who can’t afford the sky-high price tags.

It’s not only the world-class shopping that makes Konigsallee so popular  the grand boulevard is also one of the city’s most scenic stretches, offering a magnificent backdrop to a walking tour or lunch break. Laid out in 1802 and originally named Kastanienallee (Chestnut Avenue), the boulevard flanks a beautiful canalway, lined by grassy banks and rows of shady chestnut trees, and dotted with pretty footbridges and benches. Walk its full length from south to north, then walk through the vast Hofgarten park, Germany’s oldest public park, to reach Dusseldorf’s Altstadt (Old Town).
